2 Good Reasons We Should Read beyond the Bible

Participate in the Conversation

The Bible is, of course, the inspired word of God, and there is no other book like it. It has literary forms and we appreciate that about it, but it is the inspired word of God.

But there is also a sense in which God inspires gifted people to write other works. He’s the one who gives them the talent, the ability, the time, and the perseverance to write in all different genres.

Recovering the Lost Art of Reading

In today’s technology-driven culture, reading has become a lost art. Recovering the Lost Art of Reading explores the importance of reading generally and of studying the Bible as literature, while giving practical suggestions on how to read well.

Wherever we find God’s truth, goodness, and beauty in all these different things, we are the beneficiaries of what God wants us to learn about him, his world, and all the various people that he has chosen to populate the world from all different time frames and places.

When we read old books and new books alike, we’re participating in the conversation.

We want to read more than just the Bible because, from the earliest time that words were recorded, civilization has been having this ongoing conversation. When we read old books and new books alike, we’re participating in the conversation.

Glenda Faye Mathes is coauthor with Leland Ryken of Recovering the Lost Art of Reading: A Quest for the True, the Good, and the Beautiful.
