Let’s Be Thankful
A Time for Thanks
As we begin to reflect on reasons for gratitude in preparation for Thanksgiving, it will serve us to remember well that God is good even outside of the gifts he often graciously bestows to his children. In God Is the Gospel, John Piper says:
Gratitude that is pleasing to God is not first a delight in the benefits God gives (though that will be part of it). True gratitude must be rooted in something else that comes first—namely, a delight in the beauty and excellency of God’s character.
Regarding and esteeming God for who he is beyond what he gives ensures that our thanksgiving is rightly rooted. As the tract “Let’s Be Thankful” says:
God’s goodness ought to be the deepest source of our thankfulness. Everything we are or possess is because of his loving kindness. Therefore, it is good for us all to pause at least once a year and say a big “Thank You” to God.
This year, as you gather friends and family around the table, encourage thankfulness to God for all we have because of Christ.
