Should I "Like" a Social Media Post about Grief?

Why Not Click "Like"?

Should I "like" someone’s post on social media about their grief or about someone who has died? Well, I can think of a couple reasons why you wouldn't want to. I think sometimes we don’t want to because something about that just seems wrong, to press the "like" button about someone’s loss. But perhaps in other way we don’t want to push the "like" because we’ve been observing that person and they’ve posted what is, in our view, way too much about their loss and we think, "I don’t want to keep encouraging them with my little ‘like’ click to keep doing that."

What Grieving People Wish You Knew about What Really Helps (and What Really Hurts)

Nancy Guthrie

Practical and down-to-earth, this short guide will equip you to come alongside a loved one who is hurting and offer comfort in ways that really help.

Well, I want to encourage you to go ahead and "like" that post. Let them know that they are not alone. When someone going through the loss of someone they love, or maybe the loss has been a long time ago and they’re remembering—it’s been a special day—the one year mark, the two year mark, the twenty year mark of someone they loved. What they’re doing is reaching out to other people, inviting them to share their sorrow with them because grief is incredibly lonely. So go ahead, it will just cost you a click. Just let them know that you care by posting a little note, or clicking that like button.
